It is argued that people face social exclusion thanks to current technology. In my opinion, innovations are significant and bring a plenty of opportunities for every person, but at the same time they can damage people’s lives by major influencing and make them dependent. They can both increase isolation and improve communication depending on how it is used. In this essay, firstly I will explain why technology may cause social isolation, and secondly I will discuss how it can help people stay connected.
On the one hand, technology can reduce face-to-face communication. Many people spend hours using smartphones, social media, or streaming platforms instead of meeting friends and family in person. This habit can weaken real relationships and create feelings of loneliness. For example, it is common to see groups of friends sitting together but focusing on their phones rather than talking. From daily life, remote work and online education also limit physical interaction with colleagues and classmates. If smartphones had not become so popular, people might have communicated more directly in everyday situations. For these reasons, excessive use of technology can lead to social isolation.
On the other hand, technology can help people maintain relationships, especially when distance is involved. Video calls, messaging apps, and social networks allow families and friends to stay in contact regularly. During global lockdowns, many individuals would have felt completely isolated if online communication had not been available. In addition, online communities help people find others with similar interests, which can create new friendships. For instance, students studying abroad often rely on digital platforms to stay connected with loved ones. This shows that technology can strengthen social connections when it is used in a balanced way.
In conclusion, modern technology has both positive and negative effects on social interaction. While excessive use may reduce face-to-face communication, digital tools also make it easier to stay connected across distances.
