In recent years, there has been a debate over whether newly constructed houses should have the same style as traditional houses in local areas or be based on their personal preference. Although traditional style should be preserved in some areas, I believe that people ought to have freedom to choose their own design.
On the one hand, there are many place where traditional buildings represent history and cultural value of the local community. If all new houses have different styles from those of their neighbors, the area can lose its unique character. In addition, the traditional houses are often designed to be suitable for terrain and climate of that place. For instance, in places with heavy rainfall, houses usually have sloping roofs and wide eaves to drain rainwater quickly, which can prevent flooding. Therefore, this view has some practical value.
On the other hand, people have different lifestyles and financial condition therefore they may prefer houses that are suitable for their individual needs. House with modern design can bring several benefits for both homeowners and environment. For example, modern houses often have large windows for natural lighting or solar panels to reduce energy consumption. Therefore, if the government has too many rules about house design, people may find it hard to use these environmentally friendly and efficient solutions. As a result, people’s standard of living will be improved.
In conclusion, although traditional houses maintain cultural identity and preserve local traditions, I believe that it is good for people to have freedom in design their house because it will provide resident both comfort and convenience.
