In this contemporary era, it is often debated whether newly built houses should match the style of previous houses, or individuals should have authority to design their new homes. I firmly believe that both of the perspectives are true in their context but it should always be individual’s choice to design their houses.
On the one hand, preserving the designs of houses can represent history and tradition of an area. All the houses in a society, built with same designs illustrate the skills of historic architects of that particular area. Moreover, having uniform designs generally generate a soothing visual effect among visitors, hence, attracting a lot of tourism. For instance, a few years ago, the Government of India decided to renovate entire market around the Golden Temple in Punjab, giving it a uniform and historical appearance, which later on attracted a significant amount of tourists. People were highly amazed to see all the shops, and houses with same designs. Thus, it became a famous tourist spot.
On the other hand, individuals having an authority to design their homes according to their needs is equally important, as nowadays most of individuals prefer to adopt modern architectural designs for their houses so that they can survive natural calamities such as earthquakes, storms, etc in a long run. These designs are highly effective to avoid shaking effects of the earthquakes, hence, saving a lot of property damage and losses. A study conducted in the United States clearly depicts that the houses with the modern designs are generally more reliable and safer during the times of natural disasters as compared to the historic homes.
To conclude, undoubtedly, both the beliefs hold their equal importance, but I firmly believe that the individual’s need is much important than preserving history, therefore it should always be individual’s choice to design his house.
