A knife can be used to hurt others, but is designed to be a kitchen tool for cutting and peeling ingredients. Similarly, some people see social media as a threat to society, while others believe it gives many advantages if used properly. However, I believe that excessive use of social media has become common among society and leads to several psychological problems; therefore, it should be regulated.
One of the main merits of social media is that it increases public awareness and provides up-to-date information around the world. Nowadays, the majority of social media users are teenagers and adults who need extra opportunities for career and academic purposes. Social media serves as a bridge to connect them with those kinds of opportunities. In the US, many university students have secured scholarships and internships through LinkedIn and other platforms. Therefore, social media helps people to be aware of such opportunities and warns them about danger.
On the other hand, there are some risks associated with social media, such as psychological problems and online abuse. Many people run daily blogs about their lives – living in luxury villas, driving Ferraris and more. Ordinary people feel insecure and may face psychological issues. Studies have shown that excessive social media use is linked to rising rates of anxiety and depression. Therefore, one should consider the side effects and limit its use to reduce its harm.
To conclude, while social media acts as a bridge to opportunities, governments still need to teach people how to use it wisely. From my perspective, while social media offers undeniable benefits, individuals should use it mindfully and governments should regulate it to minimize its harm.
