The role of teachers in shaping the minds of young individuals has long been a topic of debate. While some people argue that educators have an onus to guide morally, others believe that their role is limited to providing academic knowledge. This essay will discuss both views before expressing my own opinion.
To begin with, educator’s primary duty is to teach academically and prepare students for exams and future careers. Obviously, moral education is said to be the obligation of parents and community, not only tutors’. In an increasingly competitive world of education, it is crucial to focus more on the academic performance of a student, rather than teaching what is good and bad. For instance, in mathematics, pupils must dedicate time to practice and understand complex theories. Focusing only on academic skills ensures they achieve the necessary knowledge to succeed in exams and future professional life.
On the other hand, students are expected to devote a significant portion of their time at schools or universities. That is to say, moral lessons take more priority in schools. Moreover, a large number of teachers are highly qualified not only academically, but also in terms of life experience. Consequently, they possess the ability to determine what is morally right or wrong.
From my perspective, teachers play a vital role in determining whether something is good or bad. While teaching academically, educators can also guide them on the right path. For example, I had a teacher at school who is very kind and at the same time well-qualified. Consequently, our teacher provided us with both academic instruction and guidance on moral values, helping us to develop our minds and ethical understanding from an early age, which is not only important for personal growth but also beneficial for society.
In conclusion, although some people believe that teachers should only teach academically their students, I believe that educators must take responsibility to guide morally.
