Some individuals think that social media helps people to easily keep in touch despite the long distance, while others prefer to mention more about the other side of the coin – people had become more distant from the real life. I have the same opinion as the latter statement, and I agree that internet had made us more isolated from reality.
The main reason of my point of view is that the internet provides the illusion of connection without its substantive depth. Instead of making the effort to meet in person, where conversations are nuanced and involve non-verbal cues like body language and tone, people often settle for quick digital interactions like texting, commenting, or liking posts.. The major part of teenagers and my peers spend a lot of time scrolling infinite videos at social media, including myself. Short videos can be addictive to watch, providing a big amount of dopamine and amusement. Moreover, we crave to watch it every free minute of our life. Whenever we get a little bit bored during breaks between lessons, we aim to unlock our phone and watch some funny videos. It leads to depression of time which we can use just to casually talk with someone beside us instead of being absorbed by internet.
The second major fact is that internet has replaced many third places like restaurants, libraries and other community centers. We can easily get the book we want just by searching it from the internet. There’s no need to cook or go to the cafes, you can just order the food by delivery using the apps like Glovo and Wolt. You can buy the clothes you want by internet, and there are so much possibilities to not go outdoors, that it makes us more closed off the world around us by making staying home – simpler.
To conclude, internet can make us avoid many interactions with friends, family and otehr people around us. Internet can make us think that we are socialising more, but from my perspective – it’s just an illusion, and in fact, we’re just escaping reality.
