Nowadays, it has become a debate among parties on whether animals should be kept in zoos or not. Many people completely refuse the idea of keeping animals in zoos while others believe the zoos are extremely important for research purposes. In this essay, I will shed light on both opinions; however, I believe that some animals can be kept in zoos under certain conditions.
On the one hand, some believe that it is harmful for the animals and the ecosystem to keep them in cages away from their natural habitat. To further illustrate, when taking a certain species from its natural environment, this will lead to the upset of natural balance leading to extinction. In addition, in some cases, not only does keeping animals in zoos lead to their depression, but also the death of the animal. For example, Animals magazine published a research in 2002 stating that 90% of the animals kept in zoos ended up dead within 3 years of their captivity.
On the other hand, some of the main reasons for zoos is for people to enjoy the exotic animals along with researchers having the opportunity to conduct further research. To illustrate, most people live in cities away from the wild where animals exist; hence, going to zoos. Moreover, many researchers find it useful to examine certain animals to discover new cures for diseases. For instance, in the year 2000 when the Swine flu hit the world, researchers made their utmost effort to extract a medicine to cure it from pigs in zoos.
In conclusion, both partis have their own reasons for keeping animals in zoos or away from zoos. However, I support keeping animals in zoos for research and to enjoy watching them..
