People have different views on whether using cultural traditions to attract tourists harms or helps to preserve them. Some think this destroys the authenticity of these traditions, while others believe tourism is necessary to keep them alive. This essay will discuss both perspectives and explain why I believe tourism can help protect cultural traditions if done carefully.
On one hand, some people argue that when cultural traditions are used as tourist attractions, they lose their original meaning and purpose. Tourists often want to see something entertaining, so traditional practices may be changed or simplified to appeal to visitors. For example, traditional dances or festivals might be shortened or performed differently for the tourist market, which can lead to a loss of authenticity. This can also lead locals to see their own culture as just a way to make money, rather than something meaningful. In this way, the true essence of cultural traditions may be damaged or forgotten.
On the other hand, others believe that tourism is essential to preserving cultural traditions. Without financial support from tourists, many traditions might disappear over time, as younger generations may not see their value or lack the resources to keep them alive. Tourism brings in money that can be used to fund cultural events, maintain historic sites, and teach young people about their heritage. For example, some traditional art forms have been revived and continue to exist mainly due to the interest and financial support from tourists.
In my opinion, while there is a risk of commercialization, tourism can play a positive role in preserving cultural traditions. If managed responsibly, tourism can provide the funds and attention needed to protect and celebrate these traditions without losing their authenticity.
