Band 7+: Students perform better in school when they are rewarded rather than punished. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Discuss both views and give your own opinion

Teaching requires distinct methods that may affect the promotion of students’ knowledge. Some teachers prefer to reward students for their progress, while others believe that punishment is necessary to enhance student performance. I believe that motivating students with rewards can encourage them to maintain good academic performance.

Punishment has been the traditional method of teaching, as teachers expect students to learn from mistakes when they are punished for them. It can help them learn from errors and prevent them from repeating them. Additionally, punishment establishes clear boundaries and consequences for behavior. However, this method is no longer appropriate in modern society, as it can affect students’ self-esteem and focus on studying. For example, a student punished for not studying well may be afraid of making mistakes again or fear failure.

If students are encouraged by their academic performance and good behavior, they will likely repeat those behaviors in the future, creating a positive learning cycle. Rewards can foster intrinsic motivation, as some students may initially be driven by external rewards. The experience of success and recognition leads to a deeper love for learning and a desire to excel for one’s own sake. This method not only influences academic achievement but also helps students develop useful skills like decision-making and problem-solving.

To conclude, schools have the option to choose the most suitable method for teaching students. While punishment may be necessary, rewards are often the best way to encourage students to study with desire rather than reluctance and enhances the level of knowledge
