Band 9: Students today can easily access information online, so libraries are no longer necessary. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is argued that the widespread availability of online information has made libraries unnecessary for students. While the internet has undoubtedly changed the way people study, I completely disagree with this statement because libraries continue to play a vital role in education.

On the one hand, the internet offers several clear advantages. Students can access reliable information within seconds without leaving their homes. It is also time efficient, user friendly and often cost effective, since many educational resources are free. Furthermore, individuals can conduct academic research, compare different sources and verify the accuracy of information more easily than before. Thanks to global accessibility and around the clock access, learners are able to study whenever they want. These advantages also foster independent learning and help students make informed decisions when completing assignments or preparing for examinations.

On the other hand, libraries remain valuable despite technological progress. They provide a quiet environment where students can focus without online distractions. In addition, libraries help preserve cultural heritage and preserve historical records, which cannot always be replaced by digital materials. Librarians can also guide visitors towards trustworthy sources, helping them enhance critical thinking instead of simply accepting the first result they find online. Moreover, libraries promote reading habits, broaden one’s horizons and support academic achievement by offering equal access to educational materials. They also provide equal educational opportunities for individuals who do not have reliable internet access, helping to bridge the digital divide and cultivate lifelong learners.

In conclusion, while online information has transformed education, I believe libraries are still essential because they complement digital resources rather than replace them completely.
