Band 7+: TASK 2: If people could choose between a life without work and spending most of their time working, they could always choose not to work. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Apparently, there are heated disputes concerning people’s willingness to work, stating that if they were allowed not to work, they would not even bother working at all. Personally, while the notion of no work obligations may sound intriguing to some, I partly believe many others would not opt for it.

On the one hand, a majority may be tempted by the idea of freedom from work for several reasons. Firstly, as the market becomes increasingly competitive, workers, particularly those who are hedonistic, are exhausted to some extent under the management of exploitative employers, hence the desire to be liberated from the workplace gets all the more vehement. In addition, this phenomenon would provide employees with unprecedented extended free time, enabling them to entertain themselves and practice self-care more frequently. These aforementioned rationales, albeit just the tip of the iceberg, are adequately compelling for employees to opt out of workplaces.

On the other hand, many still acknowledge the significance of working. Most of them are probably individuals who practically cannot live without social interactions and interpersonal relationships. Therefore, in their perspectives, going to work is an enjoyable experience, especially given that they are well-paid and have high job satisfaction. Another point worth mentioning is that people are well aware that there needs to be a balance between working and leisure; otherwise, the world would become chaotic since nobody wanted to devote their labor to supply for others’ and even their own entertainment. More simply speaking, if no one worked, no products and services would be available for recreation.

On balance, while there are many people who would choose not to work if given permission and opportunity, I concur that many others would be rational enough to not do so.
