Band 6+: Task 2: Some people say that the government should decide what subjects a student can study, while others believe the students should decide what they want to study. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Write at least 250 words.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some individuals believe that students should be allowed to choose the subjects they want to learn, while others think this decision should be made by the government. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument and give my opinion.

On one hand, giving the public officials the liberty to decide the courses that should be taught in school is beneficial because history lessons can be included in the curriculum. This will enable transfer of knowledge from one generation to another, thereby preserving vital information. For instance, the Nationalism I did in Nursing school helped increased my understanding on how Nigeria got her independence. Furthermore, it is a good opportunity to teach civil rights and liberties, thereby protecting the rights and freedom of the citizens.

On the other hand, allowing students to pick what they want to study helps focus learning on the discipline of their choice, and this is more effective for preparing them for future practice. Additionally, learners understand their strengths and weaknesses better. Giving them the opportunity to choose what they are interested in and capable of doing will improve academic success. For example, a recent survey on Nursing students at the University of Ibadan revealed that majority of them perform poorly because they were forced to study the course.

In conclusion, I think individuals should be allowed to pick courses they have interest in as this will enhance academic success. Also it helps concentrate learning on what the students need to excel in the labour market.
