Overall, the number of both males and females studying full-time increased, while the number of men studying part-time slightly decreased and the number of female part-time students rose tremendously.
With regards to men studying full-time, the chart shows a steady increase from rougly 100 thousand in 1970/71 to around 250 thousand in 1990/91. Over the same period, the amount of male part-time students fell from 1 million in 1970/71 to roughly 850 thousand in 1980/81 before slightly increasing again to 900 thousand in 1990/91.
In contrast, the number of women studying part-time rose from 750 thousand in 1970/71 to 850 thousand in 1980/81 and then surged significantly to around 1.1 million in 1990/91. Additionally, the number of female full-time students rose quickly from 100 thousand in 1970/71 to 250 thousand in 1980/81, where it reached a plateau and rose only marginally to 260 thousand in 1990/91.
