The chart illustrates the level of men and women in further education in Britain in three periods. The modes of study were full-time and part-time.
Overall, the number of male and female students was higher than part-time students from 1970 to 1990. In 1970, the number of full-time male students fluctuated, recording a number of 1,000 thousand before declining to just above 800 thousand male students. However, the number rose back to approximately 850 thousand students in the following year. The number of male part-time students showed steady growth from 1970 to 1990.
On the other hand, the number of both full-time and part-time female students increased during the period. The number of female students in 1970 was about 700 thousand and surged dramatically to about 1,100 thousand students in 1990. The same goes for part-time female students, which increased from lower than 100 thousand students to approximately 250 thousand students in 1990.
