Nowadays, cultural differences among countries are fading as individuals across the globe are increasingly favoured to consume the same movies, fashion, and commercial products. Although this could bring several benefits, I believe that the drawbacks are of greater significance. This essay will closely examine both the pros and cons arising from this phenomenon and justify my opinions with examples.
On the one hand, some people believe that globalization could foster global economic growth. The reason would be that international brands and products can benefit from widespread recognition and large demands from people all over the world, which can boost income and investment. However, this trend can impede local entrepreneurship, regional businesses, and traditional crafts. As multinationals dominate the markets, small local businesses will struggle to compete, leading to the loss of handmade products.
Another potential benefit of this development is better exchange of communication and entertainment. Nowadays, people from different nations can easily connect through similar films, music, and television shows. Nevertheless, it can lead to traditional arts and cultural diminishing. For instance, in Vietnam, traditional performances such as Hat Cheo almost vanished in the mainstream market due to the increasing popularity of Western and Korean music.
On the other hand, the dominance of Western cultures in the global market can lead to misapprehension that these cultures are superior to others. This perception contributes to a loss of cultural identities and diversities. When local traditions and values are overlooked, it is extremely dangerous because it can make younger generations feel disconnected from their roots, leading to a lack of national pride and sense of belonging. As a result, they may be less motivated to study hard to contribute to protecting and developing their own country.
To summarize, despite certain benefits that cultural uniformity can confer, namely promote economic development and facilitate global communication, I would contend that the disadvantages associated with the erosion of traditional cultures and the loss of cultural diversity are far more pronounced.
