Many people argue that social media has been negatively affecting the way people communicate throughout their every day lives, while others think it has improved the speed and convenience of it. Although, the latter argument has a reasonable view, I strongly believe that social media has a negative influence on face-to-face communication.
Social media has set unnatural norms and standards on how the interactions of people should go – especially in communication, and it has been negatively affecting the opportunity that people has in actually making meaningful connections with other people. For instance, many young people nowadays are easily consumed by what they see on social media, like the term they call “brainrot”. Since then it has affected their interactions with other people outside the digital world.
On the opposite argument, many people claims that social media has been a great aid in improving their real-life communication with others. Through interacting with different kind of people all across social media, it has helped them better the interactions they make with others, later on adapting it in real-life situations. For example, according to some freelancers since communication has a huge part in their job, social media are one of the ways they communicate and connect with people, making noticeable improvement in their face-to-face communication.
To conclude, despite the advancement and convenience of social media in the communication field (face-to-face), this essay believes that it is mostly causing harms because people rely too much on online interaction, rather than natural.
