In light of the burgeoning rates of deaths engendered by traffic accidents, a school of thoughts holds that only by implementing more draconian traffic laws can the safety of our roads be bettered. However, in this essay I will challenge this school of thought given the promotion of public awareness and the enhancement of road infrastructure.
Granted, stringent punishments for traffic violations may enhance road safety to myriad facets. Evidence for this can be seen in those who found running the red lights, driving recklessly or speeding would have to pay hefty fines, and those found driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs would have their driving license suspended or even be sentenced to jail. These punitive measures may act as an effective deterrent in order to deter road users from committing traffic offences, leading to fewer accidents.
However, I firmly believe that a comprehensive approach that combines more harsher punishments, education, and infrastructure improvements is more effecacious in an endeavor to increase road safety. With regard to education, education and awareness campaigns are at the core of the enhancement of responsible behavior. By participating in these campaigns, individuals become aware of the risks associated with reckless driving and are more likely to avoid breaking traffic rules and imperilling themselves and other road users. As for the road infrasgtructure, allocating financial resources to this can address factors contributing to accidents and hazards. For instance, adopting modern traffic signals and easily interpretable road signs equipe drivers with clear instructions, regulating traffic flow and minimizing potential confusion and collisions at intersections.
In conclusion, enforcing tougher punishments for driving offences may be workable to a certain degree but is by no means the only solution to boost the safety of road users. Others equally viable measures encompasses increased public consciousness regarding traffic safety and enhanced road infrastructure.
