Implementing new and harsher penalties for driving offences is the best way to ensure safety of commuters. Although I do agree that stricter punishments do act as a deterrent and will definitely reduce incidences of rash driving, but I disagree with the claim that it is the sole way to achieve overall safety.
To ensure safety of people on roads no of vehicular accidents need to be reduced. According to a study the primary source of road accidents are caused by mechanical malfunction and unsafe driving conditions. Therefore, better roads and implementing stricter laws that not only require regular maintenance of vehicles but also ensure proper driving standards are followed while riding in difficult conditions like using winter tires, using appropriate driving practices during rain and fog.
Another important aspect to enhance safety is the strict implementation of road safety rules in many semi urban and rural areas even basic road safety laws are not followed by people due to lack of oversight by the authorities leading too many casualties. This needs to be addressed by local governments and traffic management establishments by increasing the number of cameras, traffic inspectors, and regular screening of vehicles on highways.
In conclusion, implementing harsher penalties might bring about a small positive impact on overall road safety but many other policies and practices can also be introduced to have a much greater impact on road safety.
