Band 8+: The only way to improve safety on our roads is to give much stricter punishments for driving offenses. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Alongside with the rapid development in transportation and the rising ownership of personal vehicles, traffic volume is growing year over year, which in turn results in a large number of accidents. Although I firmly concur that implementing stringent punishments for reckless drivers is a solution, there are other measures that, I believe, are equally effective in ensuring road safety.

Firstly, a more stringent approach to the violation of traffic rules should be considered. To explain it further, one of the most dominant reasons is the lack of awareness and negligence among drivers. Lately recorded accidents are attributed to the lack of compliance from traffic participants. For example, the occurrence of traffic crashes at night can be easily seen with drunk and drowsy drivers. By enacting serious punishments, people will quickly become cautious and foresee the eventuality of not abiding by the traffic regulations, which leads to reduction of careless drivers on the street, preventing further accidents.

On the other hand, there should be more strategies put forward, especially by governments, to enhance road safety. First and foremost, roads and streets should be renovated. This is mainly due to an increasing number of vehicles and their forms. As can be seen from some accident-prone curves like narrow roads and sharp curves, law-abiding drivers can still suffer from poor visibility. Secondly, authorities should increase the number of on-duty forces. Besides managing expenditure on improving road maintenance, police and mobile forces should be seen working more often outside. This matter has also been regarded widely across the Vietnamese territories, and government efforts have been seen in these years. For instance, the Van Phong – Nha Trang expressway project is taken deeply into account by the prime minister and authorities, accelerating the progress of connecting districts, together with solving the problem of congestion and accidents.

In summary, I totally agree that effective measures, including heavier penalties on driving offenses, should be taken to maintain road safety for every participants. Combining with devotion of governments and citizens, we can shed light on a proper outlook towards the situation of the transportation and traffic system.

The notion that the imposition of stricter penalties is the sole solution to ensuring enhanced road safety is a prevalent belief.
