Transportation by road is indispensable for both the economic growth of a nation and the standard of living for its citizens. It is believed that increased penalties for driving offenses are the only solution to ameliorate road transport safety and security.
The implementation of stricter punishments, including increased fines, and license and vehicle suspensions, can have a significant impact on reducing traffic law breaches. The financial impact of these punishments can effectively function as a deterrent to reckless driving behaviors. Besides instilling a sense of accountability, harsh penalties can also serve as a warning to drivers, thereby reducing the likelihood of offenses.
However, to successfully reduce driving infractions over time, this method should be implemented alongside other strategies rather than relying solely on it. For example, campaigns such as talk shows and extracurricular lectures can be conducted at educational institutions to raise awareness about the consequences of dangerous driving and the importance of road safety. Moreover, enhanced road infrastructure, such as constructing new road networks and improving run-down areas, can also be considered potential strategies. In Vietnam, the renowned Tran Hung Dao Bridge is planned to directly connect the suburbs to the city center, which is a promising solution to reduce traffic congestion at main bridges like Vinh Tuy Bridge or Chuong Duong Bridge.
While stricter punishments for driving offenses can play a role in improving road safety, they should not be viewed as the only solution. A more comprehensive approach, including raising community awareness and upgrading infrastructure, is more likely to yield sustainable improvements in road safety.
