It is argued that advertising is useless and harmful to people, hence, a complete forbiddance of it in all forms will provide many great benefits to society. While many people agree with this thesis statement, from my perspective, everything has its pros and cons. Banning all forms of advertising might limit its assistance in several ways.
There is no denying the fact that advertising brings disadvantages to society since it is used as a tool for consumer manipulation. Due to economic benefits, businesses tend to pay for advertising agencies using some persuasive techniques to distort and exaggerate information, leading to unnecessary purchases. For instance, by watching exaggerated information advertised about the wonderful benefits it brings to our skin, people are willing to pay for these products without carefully researching if the cosmetics are suitable for them or not. Consequently, people may feel disapointed because the product is not as effective as they expected or even worse, some people need medical intervention because of the negative side effects on their skin.
On the other hand, advertising is also a good technique to bring useful and informative advantages to the customers. By watching advertisements, buyers are suggested potential products and provided with useful information that suits their personal needs. Although there is some exaggerated information, businesses are not allowed to distort the facts about their products which are carefully researched and tested before being released to the market. Relating to the same above example, depending on the buyer’s skin types and how they use the cosmetics, some beauty products are actually as effective as advertised. However, to ensure their satisfaction, the customer should thoroughly research about the product by combining the facts from the advertisement and reviews from other users.
To conclude, everything has its pros and cons, advertising might be harmful to people, but we cannot deny that it has some benefits. In my opinion, we should limit and enact regulations instead of banning all types of advertising.
