Overall, there is a notable increase in the total number of research students in the two years, with local students outnumbering the non-local ones.
According to the table, there were 33,657 local and 39,488 international students engaging in research field in 2001, making up 38,849 of the total number. Then, the figures rose slightly to 39,488, whereas that of international students experienced a trebling in 14,593 after 9 years. These two figures brought to 54,081 students in total.
Turning to the pie charts, local male and female research students accounted for 44 and 43 percent, which was relatively equaled and made up 87 percent in 2001. In comparison, the foreign students split between 9 percent male and 4 percent female, totaling 13 percent. In 2010, the domestic students shared dipped moderately by 38 percent male and 35 percent female, accounting for nearly three quarters. The contribution of international students increased minimally to 12 percent male and 15 percent female by 2010.
