The popularity of social media has surpassed face-to-face interaction for a large number of men and women in their lives. Although it may predispose individuals to a sedentary lifestyle, I believe that its upsides outweigh its drawbacks because this trend has enlarged the social circles of people.
The primary disadvantage of this issue is that due to virtual communication conveniences, people have become more solitary. In other words, with the advent of online communication options, such as Facebook and Twitter, people have thought that they no longer have to go outside to get together with their social milieus. As a result, the majority of society opts to get in touch with their acquaintances via social media platforms, and have isolated themselves physically from the community. For instance, in Turkey, children used to socialize on the streets; however, nowadays, the streets are empty because minors prefer to speak with their friends through their social media accounts.
Social media applications, on the other hand, have enabled people to enhance their social range. This is because social media users can get together on the same online platform regardless of their nations or locations. Therefore, they have found the opportunity of encountering a vast amount of people. Instagram is a prime example, which offers people a meticulous environment to interact with others from every corner of the world.
In conclusion, even though people have turned out more independent in their lives after the rise of social media, I would argue that the advantages of this development far outweigh its handicaps, as thanks to them, fewer people suffer from social loneliness.
