Band 7+: The world's natural resources are consumed at an ever-increased rate. What are the dangers of this situation? What should we do?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is argued that the Earth’s resources are being exploited at a rapidly increasing rate. This essay attempts to shed light on the detrimental impacts of this negative tendency before outlining several viable solutions that should be adopted to tackle it.

There are two major problems attributable to the overexploitation of natural resources. First and foremost, this phenomenon is having an adverse bearing on the environment. For instance, the burning of carbon-intensive energy sources has led to serious air pollution, which could cause residents living in urban areas to suffer from serious diseases, namely lung cancer and respiratory infection. Furthermore, as humans consume more and more resources from nature, the amount of waste disposed of also increases. Consequently, the disposal of industrial waste has polluted rivers, lakes, and oceans, which could threaten marine life and even residents living in the vicinity of these places.

To combat this worrying issue, it is crucial to take the following feasible steps. The first measure is to impose and enforce laws to regulate the exploitation of natural resources. For instance, the governing bodies should impose taxes on the use of the Earth’s resources, such as water or wood, to reduce the demand, which could also make people use these resources more responsibly. Another remedy is that governmental bodies should research and introduce alternative energy sources, such as wind and solar energy. This is because of the fact that these types of energy could not only minimize human reliance on natural resources but also have minimal impact on the environment, and they could guarantee the sustainable development of humanity in years to come.

In conclusion, there are a host of serious repercussions attributable to the overconsumption of the Earth’s resources, and it is crucial that the aforementioned measures be implemented to mitigate these issues.
