Band 8+: There is a growing demand for fresh water nowadays and this is becoming a global problem. What are the causes and solutions?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In some countries, fresh water is now running dry at an alarming rate. This issue stems from various causes, and addressing it requires a comprehensive, multifaceted approach.

One major cause associated with a lack of freshwater supplies is that farming requires large amounts of water. In fact, farming accounts for 70 percent of withdrawals. As the planet’s growing need for food and the water involved in producing crops and meat are indispensable for meeting people’s daily needs. Another key factor is that urban planning in many cities prioritized recreational places and high-rise developments for residents, neglecting the scarcity of water. For instance, the World Cup 2022 in Qatar, they utilized at least 10000 litres of water every day for each of its stadium pitches. As a result, these reasons have depleted potable water supplies.

To effectively tackle water shortages, several steps can be taken. First and foremost, making farming less thirsty is crucial. This could involve growing newly bred, perhaps genetically modified crops that are drought-resistant or higher-yielding. Such preparation can diminish water volume for agricultural. Additionally, governments should consider policies that regulate the approval of new infrastructure projects. For example, it should expand water infrastructure, including reservoirs, pipelines, and water treatment plants, before approving new urban developments.

Of course, these solutions are not without challenges. Planting new breeds is more likely to boost productivity; no one has yet managed to produce plants that offer dramatically less water. Without such a breakthrough, growing more crops inevitably means losing more water, since each extra plant transpires water vapour into the atmosphere during photosynthesis. Furthermore, developing large-scale water infrastructure is a time-consuming process, meaning that the benefits may not be seen immediately.
