Nowadays, people all around the world are considering edible insects as a food source to tackle growing population needs. However, some believe that consumption of bugs is unhealthy and has adverse effects on nature. This growing trend of preferring insects as edible supply has both advantages and disadvantages, which will further be discussed in the essay.
Using arthropods as eatables has a benefit of reducing deaths caused by hunger. This is because, firstly bugs can be available due to their large populace and lastly consumption of these small organisms is mostly free as these can be found anywhere, which means selling for money is not an option to choose. Therefore, having huge and cost-free access to tiny creatures reduces hunger in humans. Hence leading to lower deaths caused by starvation for example, millions die every day due to starvation so, eating pests will reduce fatalities.
However, insects as a staple food have a drawback of damaging the eco-system of Earth. This occurs as eating these pests might endanger certain species in the wildlife for example killing grasshoppers creates a shortage in other grasshopper dependent animals’ diet, hence causing a chain reaction in the environment. Thereby this chain reaction could potentially lead to mass extinction, thus disrupting the eco system.
Therefore, in conclusion preferring insects as food has some advantages like reduction in fatalities and famines, but at the same time it also has some disadvantages like destruction of natural environment due to mass extinctions of various living organisms caused by shortages in their appetite.
