Band 7+: Today’s teenagers have a more stressful life than previous generations. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In comparison to previous generations, teenagers today lead more stressful lives than those in the past. In my opinion, I concur with this view and this essay will elaborate on the contributing factors that substantiate my stance.

To begin with, academic pressure stems from societal belief that academic excellence is directly linked to future opportunities and overall life success.Consequently, parents, educators and society as a whole impose significant expectations on teenagers to achieve academic exellence. For example, a close relative of mine is obligated by a parent to engage in extensive reading, attend supplementary educational institutions, and secure scholarships from prestigious universities. This pressure has led him to feel stressed and anxious about his future.

Additionally, normal citizens nowadays are more pressured by various unrealistic standards. Social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, often present adolescents with meticulously crafted images and lifestyles that may deviate from reality. For example, a recent study found that teenagers who spend a lot of time on social media are more likely to compare themselves to others and feel inadequate. This disparity can engender feelings of inadequacy as adolescents juxtapose themselves against these unattainable standards. Moreover, the pressure to comfort these idealized representations can induce stress and anxiety as teenagers endeavor to project a specific online persona.

In conclusion, academic pressure and social media influence are two major factors that contribute to the increased stress levels experienced by teenagers today. These factors can lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. It is important for parents, teachers, and other adults to be aware of these factors and to provide support to teenagers who are struggling with stress.
