There is no denying that tourism is one of the world’s fastest-growing industries and can provide economic benefits for countries. However, I strongly agree with those who feel that tourism can also bring damage to some cultures and environments, which is often ignored.
The first argument is that tourism can lead a country to grow in terms of economy and culture. In contrast, the local unemployment rates may decline in some areas. For example, many hotels are built which require a crew to serve visitors. Furthermore, as tourists are interested in souvenirs, local sellers have a greater opportunity to sell their traditional crafts. As a result, local citizens can introduce their cultural history and traditions to foreigners by selling local items or crafts.
The second reason is that tourism would likely create a negative impact on the environment. Some visitors might not value the importance of tourist attractions. For instance, some historical sites are prohibited to people, causing them to visit from afar. A few visitors ignore the laws, and the ancient relics are likely to be gradually destroyed. Moreover, several national parks provide facilities for tourists to stay in, such as tents and swimming equipment. Some tourists litter and destroy trees to start fires. I feel that the value of these losses may be neglected by the authorities due to the financial profit generated by the tourism industry.
In conclusion, it appears that many countries make a lot of money from tourism. As a result, many governments ignore the negative aspects of this field, such as environmental devastation. Having considered the drawbacks, I have no doubt that there is a need for sustainable tourism practices that balance economic benefits with cultural and environmental protection.
