Band 6+: Wealthy countries should accept more refugees and provide them with basic assistance such as food and housing. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is argued that more refugees should be taken in and given accommodations and food by rich nations. This essay disagrees with this statement because this would make those countries more crowded and the financial situation of those nations are not good enough to support their own citizens, not to mention outsiders.

Accepting more refugees to come into a country would make the place more populated and cause a lot of trouble. Refugees are low-skilled workers so they are cheap to hire. When they occupy more job positions, local people are more likely to face the problem of losing jobs. Besides working opportunities, if there is not enough housing for everyone in a country with a high population, locals could end up buying or renting expensive houses. This is illustrated by the situation of people moving from rural to urban area, which leads to a higher population density of a city and causes lack of housing and higher unemployment rate.

The economies of so-called “wealthy nations” are not entirely financially stable to take care of everyone. Those are normally developed countries with well-established societal development while we can see that local people are facing financial struggles. Homeless men roaming the streets and robbing are still commonplace. Because of inflation, unemployment and other problems, some of the locals are struggling to make a living. For example, although England is considered as a developed country, a recent news report showed that its economy these years is suffering and it is likely to continue. Therefore, governments need to put their priorities to support their people rather than newcomers.

In conclusion, rich countries should not open their doors to let more refugees come in because the lives of local citizens would be negatively affected if the housing and job market become more competitive. On the other hand, there are no sufficient or extra governmental resources to give to refugees.
