Band 8+: What are the main problems associated with using social media platforms?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Social media platforms are causing numerous problems, lack of social interaction being the most dominant one, and reducing screen time can significantly improve the situation.

Excessive use of social media platforms leads to less in-person interaction and socialization. Due to this, the face-to-face communication skills of people are highly underdeveloped, causing a lack of confidence. The body language and speaking skills of individuals suffer, resulting in embarrassment in real-life situations. For example, young adults who are accustomed to texting may struggle to maintain eye contact or engage in meaningful conversations during job interviews. Furthermore, ways of communicating on social media and in real life are extremely distinctive, leading to confusion in adapting to real-world scenarios. Studies have shown that people who spend more time on their phones scrolling and chatting are more likely to develop introverted personalities with little to no social life.

The practical solution to this problem would be to reduce screen time. The less these apps are used, the more a person is encouraged to develop the interactive aspects of social life. For instance, setting a daily timer for app usage can increase family time and motivate individuals to join community clubs or participate in sports activities, further developing and enhancing social skills. Research conducted by Health Affairs revealed that people who spent more time with their families experienced minimal depression, which is often a result of excessive social media usage.

In conclusion, these virtual social platforms are restricting the authenticity of personal interactions and disrupting the social lives of people. By simply reducing our daily usage, we can improve our face-to-face communication skills, regain confidence, and foster healthier social relationships.
