Band 7+: Why are you a good candidate for the Lumiere Research Scholar Program? *

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many students think about sciences independently. I am more interested in combining sciences as that is where the real benefit comes in. Interdisciplinary sciences are the future for solving earth’s problems. I aim to bridge the gap between math, science and humanities which results in more rounded and effective research that results in real benefits for us. I have rigorously self studied multiple courses and fields of my interest which shows that I am capable of following up with lumiere. Additionally, I am an altruistic person who extensively shares her knowledge with her community because I wholly believe that it is not ethical to have only a few people who are educated and leave the other people behind. For instance, I launched a plan for learning English step by step for my classmates and then it flowed to all stem schools across the country. I broke their procrastination that emerged from the fear of failing.

My deep love for arts and imagination would be a supplementary tool for scientific research as I think no research can be purely scientific. Every science is art and every art is science. Einstein was known to be of great imagination which made him an infamous physicist.

I have gotten extremely high grades throughout my life, with my 9th grade percentage being 99.46% despite being such a stressful and depressing year for me. I worked through a chronic illness I got and got out with an excellent grade which proves that I have the potential to work under pressure and produce great results.

My undying curiosity for learning will be an essential trait for the lumiere research program. Research requires immense curiosity to uncover the unknown and persistence to learn even if the learning process is hard.

I am a strong candidate because I approach problems the way researchers do, by sitting with uncertainty long enough to turn it into a question worth answering. I first encountered environmental issues not as topics to study, but as questions that seemed impossible to ignore. A West African forest on a map looked intact, yet […]

My fascination with the classics lies in the profound ways in which Greco-Roman antiquity established the foundations for modern political structures, literature, art, and philosophical thought. This passion of mine recently culminated in my High Honours award in the Lumiere Essay Competition, where I interrogated modern democracy which I contrasted with the democratic thought of […]

To achieve something, does someone else always have to have achieved it? In my country, around me, most people follow the same path or are influenced by what people say. I don’t think they really know what they want. Most people follow the same path anyway, like everyone else, you have to do well in […]

I believe that everyone needs external support to some degree. Over the past nine months, my understanding of this phrase has changed a lot. I used to think that everyone should cope with problems on their own, but now I realize that everyone deserves to be supported. This is especially important in a society where […]

The government should stop supporting public libraries because most information is available online. Do you agree or disagree.

Governments should not discontinue allocating financial support to public libraries because the internet makes a great deal of information available to users. In my opinion, the government should provide financial support for public libraries, based on the ways that they benefit both learners and researchers. Firstly, one argument in favour of investing in public libraries […]

Many people leave the countryside for the greater opportunities which are offered by cities. This move is not without disadvantages for both people and the environment. What are some benefits and drawbacks of urbanization

In recent decades, a number people are leaving rural area to move to urban cities in search of better standards of living. Undoubtly, an urbanization creates significant benefits such as in the area of finding a job; whereas, it also brings several drawbacks which can include traffic jam and pollution. One of the most notable […]

"Some people think that governments make laws about people's food while others believe that it is a personal choice."

Nowadays, there is an ongoing debate about whether governments should regulate people’s dietary habits. While some argue that such measures are necessary to improve public health, I strongly disagree because they restrict individual freedom and are unlikely to produce effective long-term results. One major reason why authorities should not interfere in citizens’ eating habits is […]

In the modern world, it is possible to shop, work and communicate with people via internet and live without any face-to-face contact with others. Is it a positive or negative development?

Nowadays it is possible to commerce, remote work, digital interactions by way of internet. While I acknowledge there is some truth to this statement, I firmly believe this shift constitutes a largely negative development. One advantage of this, it is simple to shop online, work sitting at home and communicate with friends just by calling […]

A growing number of young people are choosing to live in large urban centers rather than staying in their rural hometowns, leading to the decline of countryside communities. What are the causes of this migration and what measures can be taken to encourage people to stay in rural areas?

Rising number of individuals are moving from rural areas to city centers these days rather than staying in their rural hometown, which as a result leads to decline of countryside residents. This is due to substantial opportunities and amenities cities have over villages, and should be adressed by subsidies offered by governments to encourage individuals […]

Teenagers should have regular exams at secondary school as this will prepare them better for life after leaving school. Do you agree or disagree?

Exams are an important feature of secondary education. However, there is contention over whether frequent exams prepare students for post-school life. I believe that teenagers should be given regular exams as this will provide useful practice before they go on to be assessed in university and also help develop a range of skills which are […]
