Band 9: With increasing automation in the workplace, some believe that creativity and critical thinking skills are becoming less important for employees. Others argue that these skills are more essential than ever. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

With the rapid growth of automation in the workplace, some people argue that creativity will become less important for future employees, as machines increasingly handle complex tasks. I strongly disagree with this view and believe that creativity will become even more essential as automation reshapes the nature of work.

Those who believe creativity will decline often point to the ability of automated systems to perform tasks that once required human input. Advances in artificial intelligence allow machines to analyse data, generate content, and follow established procedures with speed and accuracy. As a result, many traditional roles are becoming more technical and standardised, leading to the perception that creative skills are no longer necessary.

However, this argument overlooks the fact that automation primarily replaces routine and predictable tasks rather than human judgment. As machines take over repetitive work, employees are increasingly expected to design processes, solve unfamiliar problems, and adapt to constantly changing job requirements. These responsibilities demand creative thinking, particularly when workers must apply knowledge in new contexts or develop innovative solutions that technology alone cannot provide.

Moreover, automation often creates new roles rather than eliminating work entirely. Fields such as digital marketing, product development, and strategic planning rely heavily on creativity to interpret data, understand human behaviour, and make decisions that align with organisational goals. In this sense, creativity becomes a key factor that allows individuals to remain relevant and competitive in an automated labour market.

In conclusion, rather than reducing the importance of creativity, automation increases the demand for it. As routine tasks are automated, future employees will need creativity to adapt, innovate, and work effectively alongside advanced technologies.
