Cause And Solution

Band 8+: With the rise of remote work, many employees now spend long hours in virtual meetings, leading to a phenomenon known as 'Zoom fatigue' and a decline in physical activity. What are the root causes of this issue, and what solutions can be implemented to promote well-being among remote workers?

Today, many people work from home instead of going to an office. While this gives workers more freedom, it also brings new problems. People now spend too many hours in video calls, which makes them feel deeply tired – a problem called “Zoom fatigue.” They also move their bodies much less than before. This essay will discuss why this happens and look at some simple ways to fix it.

The main reason for video call tiredness is that online meetings require too much focus. In a real office, it is easy to understand what people mean by watching their hand movements or expressions. On a computer screen, you have to stare closely at faces for a long time, which tires the brain. Also, seeing your own face on the screen all day makes you feel nervous and stressed. At the same time, physical activity drops because people no longer have a daily commute. They do not walk to different meeting rooms or visit coworkers’ desks. Instead, they just sit in the same chair all day.

Fortunately, there are simple ways to solve these problems. First, companies can make a rule to shorten meetings. For example, a one-hour meeting can be cut to 45 minutes. This gives workers a short break to stand up, stretch, and rest their eyes. Second, bosses can allow “camera-off” meetings or use regular phone calls. When the camera is off, workers feel less stressed. They can even walk around the room while talking, which helps them get some exercise. Finally, workers should turn off the setting that shows their own face on the screen to lower their anxiety.

In conclusion, sitting for long hours and staring at screens are the main causes of Zoom fatigue and a lack of exercise. However, we can fix these issues by making meetings shorter and turning off video cameras when they are not needed. By taking these steps, working from home can be both healthy and successful.
