In many countries, people are now living longer than ever before. Some people argue that an ageing population creates problems for governments. Other people believe there would be benefits if society had more elderly people. In my opinion, there might be a few concerns with the senior citizen population, but the advantages of having an ageing population does outweigh the disadvantages.
One of the main disadvantages of having a huge aged population is the increased burden on the government. As the elderly retire, it leads to a slump in the working-age population. This decreases the earning power of the country. This leads to a larger need for pensions, tax reductions, and government schemes focused on the welfare of the aged population. For example, in countries like India, medical bills and health issues faced by senior citizens are often looked after by the government. It pays more than half of any medical bill filed by an old-age person.
But on the other hand, there are numerous benefits of having a large senior citizen population. Mainly, the knowledge and the wisdom the old people have come into play when younger generations need guidance in any aspect of life. When they are allowed to live together in a family, they foster a sense of togetherness and often provide their valuable suggesions in making the key decisions related to the financial and family issues. They also have a great knowledge of traditions and culture, so they play a key role in developing a rich cultural and traditional heritage in the family.ountries like Germany have adopted policies that promote employment opportunities for older individuals, thereby mitigating the challenges associated with an ageing population.
In conclusion, while ageing does present some economic challenges, it also offers important social and cultural benefits. Therefore, I believe that implementing policies that promote active ageing and sustainable pension plans could easily overshadow the economic downsides, as the plethora of advantages offered by old age are more important.
