In several of countries, life expectancy has risen compare to the past. Some people argue that old adult create problems for government, especially due the financial burden they imposed, while others believes that society can benefits from the elderly population, particularly because of their valuable experience and contributions. In my opinion, although there are some advantages, the disadvantages are greater.
On the one hand, an ageing population can create multiple challenges. Firstly, governments need to spend more money on healthcare and pensions. Older people often require medical treatment and long-term care; therefore, this can put pressure on public services. Moreover, if a larger number of people retire, there may be a shortage of workers of the country. For instance, in developed countries such as Japan, companies sometimes struggle to find enough employees to replace retired workers. Consequently, productivity may decrease and economic growth can slow down. In addition, as fewer young people work and pay taxes, it becomes more difficult for the government to support the elderly population.
On the other hand, having more elderly people can also bring benefits. For example, elderly individuals have valuable experience and knowledge that can be shared with younger generations. Furthermore, many grandparents help take care of their grandchildren, which supports working parents. In addition to this, some older people continue to work or do voluntary activities; thus, they might be contributed positively to society.
In conclusion, although an ageing population has some advantages, such as experience and social support, overall, I believe the disadvantages, especially economic burden and healthcare problem, outweigh the benefits.
