Excessive consumption of sugar could lead to an obesity epidemic and health diseases. To mitigate this, the government should implement strict regulations and policies. Increasing taxes on manufactured foods and drinks and promoting a healthy lifestyle could reduce the tendency to consume sugary products. I firmly believe that although this product fulfils our life desires, higher prices can reduce demand and encourage healthier choices.
On the one hand, tax could be effective in reducing the demand for this. For instance, Bangladesh increased the tax by 25% on unhealthy products in 2020. Consequently, sugary drinks in 2021 reduced sales by 12% in the first year. Although sugary manufacture companies had lost their financial stability , many diseases such as type-2 diabetes and dental decay had mitigated in the first year after imposing the tax rules. People got a healthier life; particularly women and men were able to improve their fit in detering sugary foods.
On the other hand, low-income people always choose cheap processed food as a healthier option. For instance, African countries rely on added sugar product due to they can buy this kind of food easily. Poor people spend a larger share of their income to busy packing sugary food then organic food. As a result, it disproportionately affects low-income groups.
In conclusion, raising the prices of sugary food and drink products is an effective strategy to reduce sugar consumption and improve public health. Although there are some potential drawbacks, they can be managed through supportive government policies. Therefore, I believe that the benefits of this approach outweigh the disadvantages.
