The tables illustrate how the number of international students studying in Canada and the United State varied among 3 countries of origin in 2002 and 2003.
Overall, while the number of students choosing the United State as an abroad destination in both years was superior in comparison with that of Canada, the figure for international students studying in Canada witnessed a more dramatic rise. Additionally, China sent the most students to both countries in that period.
Regarding Canada, in 2002 and 2003, there were about 60,000 and 70,000 international students, respectively, approximately 10 times smaller than that of the USA; however, this means that a 17-percent growth was recorded in the figure for Canada, much more significant than 2 percent of the United State. Among 3 countries of origin, China took the lead with 5,400 in 2002 and 7,850 in 2003, which rose approximately half. Moreover, India, which was in the last position with much smaller data, also witnessed a remarkable rise by 35%.
About the USA, tiny changes were reported in the number of students in the 2 years. The figure for China, Canada and total number experienced a marginal climb with China still holding its first position while Indian students choosing the USA to study abroad decreased by 9 percent.
