There have been two schools of thoughts today, either the government should subsidise healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables or rather tax them instead. Both views are laudable and are discussed below.
First and foremost, those with the view that fruits and vegetables should be subsidised buttress their stand with the fact that they are essential foods and hence contribute immensely to health. So everyone needs them. However, others have it that tax is our major source of income for developmental projects, so we have to levy them to generate money for development.
Adding to the above, the government paying part of the cost of fruits and vegetables becomes a considerable effort to fairly distribute national cake for everyone to take part in its consumption. In this regard, some parts have already been paid for and hence affordable. In contrast, others believe there are pressing areas such as education, roads and transport, health care and others that needs more attention than a mere fruits and vegetables which may even be an option in our diet.
Again, subsidising these kinds of foods help promote good health among the individuals beneficiaries if engage in in its intake. This reduces diseases and disorders associated with lack of the foods in question. Also, pressure on our health facilities is reduced. On the other hand, these foods are low cost foods which are available on the market. It should not require huge sum of money to before we can afford them. I suggest that the subsidy should be on items like water, electricity health care and othe life demanding goods that are expensive and beyond the affordability of the people.
I wouldn’t conclude by saying that both subsidising fruits and vegetables are Important. The same applies to other relevant areas like health care, education and electricity. These areas also need subsidisation of which the government has to pay attention
