In recent years, fear of criminal activities has been increasing in many countries. Although some people say the crime situation is beyond resolution, I believe there are measures can be implemented.
Those who think that nothing can be done hold this view for several reasons. First of all, the major idea of committing crime is social inequality. It caused by social and economic issues which are too difficult to tackle, for example growing income gap between the rich and the poor. Little then can be done to change our capitalism society. Another reason of people’s despair is demanded shocking content in social media nowadays. Many people enjoy watching controversial actions online, such as physical and emotional abuse, which is, for instance, common in high school. As a result, many bloggers ready to commit crime and translate it on the Internet. I personally observed comments under a video of a girl being bullied, where viewers appeared to take pleasure in what they saw. Therefore, as long as such content will be supported, solving the crime problem is nearly impossible.
However, I feel there is a solution that will ensure people feel safe outside their homes. The government can increase police presents in local areas, who will be responded for preventing crime and citizen’s well-being. For example, I would enhance the security presence in the shopping mall I frequently visit, as I observe broken glass doors at the entrance almost every month. Moreover, media platforms should be tightly monitored to suppress inappropriate content and support positive ideas instead. In terms of social issues, the government should addressing problem of poverty through better income distribution.
In conclusion, there is well-funded belief that nothing can be done to prevent criminal activity. In contrast to this, I would argue that there are options available which would change the situation and therefore reduce the fear of crime.
