There have been arguments related to whether fruits and vegetables should be subsidised to provide reasonable and nutritious food for everyone, whereas some people believe that imposing high taxes on junk food can be a better alternative. In my opinion, a combination of both is the best way forward.
On one hand , I agree that cutting the prices of healthy products like fruits and vegetables can be beneficial for the society as a whole, as it can also allow people from all income backgrounds to afford good food. This can encourage people to lead a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. It can also lead to huge savings on obese related health cost. In my opinion, it is the right time for the Government to intervene and create a safe environment for the consumers where they don’t have to think twice before purchasing products that are beneficial for them.
The Government can also raise the prices of unhealthy food items by putting them under a tax bracket can also be good option. As noted, the consumption of such products have increased among the younger population in the recent years. This is mainly because these food options are easily available and low in prices. High rates of taxes should be imposed on these product to restrict their manufacturing and selling. I believe this can help people to choose better food options that are cost-effective and wholesome.
To conclude, I believe that the best way is to employ both the strategies together. Imposing tax on unhealthy food can discourage people from buying them, and they money raised can then be used to subsidise fruits and vegetables, thus making them more attractive to customers.
