Band 6+: Some people think that government should decide which subject should students’ study at the University while others believe that students should be allowed to apply for subjects they prefer. Discuss both views.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people believe that the government needs to choose what subjects students choose to study at university. On the other hand, the opposing view states that cohorts should be given the freedom to pick their subject of choice. This essay will discuss both points of view and explain why I strongly believe that the autonomy of each student is important to succeed in higher education.

One of the main benefits of the government selecting a specific university-level subject for each student is that it allows the development of workforces for the specific sector that lacks adequate staffing. For example, the authority can increase the number of medical school places, which would reduce staff shortage by allowing the training of more medical students. However, this method of selecting a course for students will take away the autonomy of students. This may reduce the enjoyment of the subject or cause poor performance since they lack the ambition to continue in a such career.

In contrast, enabling each individual to pick their subject to study will be more motivating and enjoyable. I believe that students should be given free will to shape their future, which starts with having the ability to choose their career path. Some of the courses are very expensive and demanding. Therefore, students may not be able to afford to pay for certain courses that are chosen for them by the government which will limit students from accessing or opting for cheaper or less demanding courses.

In summary, a university course selected by the government for each person may help to direct the workforce to some sectors but this action will take an individual’s right to choose and shape their future. Therefore, giving students the right to set their desired subject to study would enable them to enjoy their chosen field.
