Overall, Brisbane experiences consistently higher temperatures than Canberra throughout the year, with a much smaller gap between daily maximums and minimums. By contrast, Canberra has far colder winters, while the two cities also show contrasting rainfall patterns, with Brisbane being wetter in the summer months and Canberra receiving more rain during winter.
In terms of temperature, Brisbane’s maximum averages remain above 20°C all year, peaking at around 29°C in January and December, while its minimums range between 10°C in July and roughly 21°C in January. In comparison, Canberra’s climate is more extreme: the daily maximum falls from 21°C in January to about 11°C in July, while minimums drop sharply to close to 0°C mid-year, before rising again to 12°C by December. The gap between summer and winter temperatures is therefore far greater in Canberra than in Brisbane.
Turning to rainfall, Brisbane records the highest number of wet days in March, at around 14, but this figure declines to only 7 between June and September. Canberra, on the other hand, shows an opposite trend. The city has relatively few rainy days at the start of the year (about 7 in January), but this number rises to a peak of 10 days per month in June, July and August, before falling back again towards the end of the year.
