Nowadays, many people think the value of the degree of social science is worthless while the degree of science and engineering is valuable because front one cannot create wealth for the country directly. This social sight may also due to the high gap of average salary between service industry and technology industry. However, when it come to the ‘value’ of an academic subject we should consider more than just money.
In my opinions, all the subjects could be related to each other, in other words, there is nothing useless. For example, art seems has nothing to do with science and engineering. Actually, a lot of technic product concepts were inspired from the artworks. Such as smart phone, electric car and artificial intelligence Things around us are science fiction in the past. Artists image picture and scientists and engineers make it real, ‘not useful’ and ‘useful’ subjects cooperate together then make the society move on. Some subjects can be useful not according to the money but make people’s life better. Psychologists investigate people’s mind and help them overcome challenges in their life. Linguists study the way language works which create more effective methods of language learning. Their analyses let people from different cultures understand each other, moreover, improved international communication resulted in better trading relations. According from above, all academic subjects are ‘useful’ and necessary for society improvement.
In summary, evaluating the value of an academic subject by whether it can generate wealth for the country is inadequate. Human’s curiosity of both the world of material and spiritual is an important human trait that make human keep go ahead. Every academic subject has its own value.
