In recent years there has been a huge increase in the number of individuals questioning the importance of planting trees or building housing in vacant spaces. I firmly believe that building new green areas has more advantages. Not only is it better for the environment, but also it is a good space for relaxation or recreation.
First, there is a point to be made that trees are replacing carbon dioxide with oxygen, which helps with purifying the atmosphere. For example, in 2019 building three new parks in Geneva reduced the production of CO2 by 30%. For this reason, it is evident that new parks can be beneficial for our planet because they can even help to postpone the warming of the climate because less greenhouse gases are emitted. Moreover, green areas like parks or forests are home to many species, so planting more trees helps to diversify the ecosystem. Thus, if trees were not planted, more greenhouse gases would be emitted and many species would not have a place to live.
In addition to this, it must be stated that parks are good places to relax. For instance, numerous studies have shown that the natural green colour and sound of nature have calming effects. Therefore, it is clear that in parks it is easier to relax and because of that people are more fulfilled and motivated because they are not so stressed. Furthermore, green spaces are ideal places to walk or wander with friends, simply because they are calm and not very crowded, so the conversation there can be private. With this in mind, if housing were built instead of green areas, people would be unsatisfied and stressed.
From my perspective, the overwhelming evidence seems to suggest that it is better for environment and society to plant trees instead of building houses.
