Band 8+: Students today can easily access information online, so libraries are no longer necessary. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is believed that students are able to access online materials nowadays, therefore, libraries are not essential. I wholly disagree with this viewpoint.

The first justification for my disagreement is that libraries foster an effective learning environment. Undoubtedly, due to the development of technology, students can easily acquire academic content online through smartphones and tablets despite geographical constraints. However, they can be distracted by application notifications or messages from friends during their study process. In contrast, libraries usually provide a quiet atmosphere, designated zones, and study rooms, which can prevent irritating noise and distractions from social media and pop-ups. As a result, this can lead to improved concentration and better productivity in students’ studies, ultimately facilitating positive outcomes in their academic performance.

Another justification is that learning materials in libraries are more reliable. While it is true that students can access a wealth of information online, the reliability and quality of these resources can vary widely. For example, several media platforms allow individuals to publish content without proper verification, leading to the potential spread of misinformation. In contrast, libraries provide access to verified, peer-reviewed, and authoritative sources such as academic journals, books, and reference materials. Furthermore, these resources are written and reviewed by experts with extensive experience, ensuring that students can accumulate knowledge effectively for their research and study and avoid misleading or incorrect information. As a result, this can enhance knowledge accumulation and profound understanding, which can afford learners an opportunity to become well-informed individuals.

In conclusion, I strongly disagree that libraries are becoming less important since students can effortlessly search for information by using online platforms. This is because libraries can offer a focused environment for study and learning resources with superior reliability, which remain valuable for learners’ academic success. Therefore, I recommend that educational institutions should maintain library spaces for academic efficiency, allowing students to access relevant information and deepen their knowledge.
