Band 9: Handwriting today is less formal than it was in the past. What are the causes of this change? Is it a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The prevalence of handwriting has diminished significantly in recent decades. This decline, in my view, stems from several key factors, primarily the rise of digital communication and printing technologies. Ultimately, I believe this shift is a positive development, offering increased security and efficiency.

Several factors contribute to the reduced formality and frequency of handwriting. Most notably, the proliferation of communication apps has revolutionized how we interact. Smart devices and the internet allow instant global communication via text and email. The speed and ease of these methods far surpass handwriting, leading to a widespread preference for digital communication. Furthermore, the advent of printing has significantly impacted the use of handwriting in professional contexts. Printers offer a consistent, aesthetically pleasing, and efficient alternative to handwritten documents, making them the preferred choice for businesses and organizations.

This trend towards digital communication offers numerous advantages. Firstly, it enhances security. While handwritten letters can be lost or intercepted, digital communication, particularly when utilizing secure platforms, provides a much higher level of confidentiality. Major social media companies invest heavily in security measures to protect user data, making it considerably more difficult for unauthorized access to occur. Secondly, digital communication is significantly more efficient. Sending a message across continents takes mere seconds, unlike the days or weeks required for traditional mail. This increased speed and convenience benefits both individuals and businesses.

In conclusion, the decreased formality of handwriting is a direct result of the rise of digital communication technologies and printing. This shift is demonstrably positive, offering enhanced security and significantly improved efficiency in communication.
