Overall, the number of children and adultsdecreased over the period while proportion of older people increases. The adult group (25-64) is the biggest group on all years.
In 1960, about 65% of people in Japan were in the 25-64 age group. This number went up a little around 70% in 1970 and stayed almost the same untill 1990. After that, it started to fall and was about 60% in 2020. It is expected to go down slightly again by 2040
The youngest group people aged 0-14, was around 30% in 1960. It increased to about 35% in 1970, but then it down steadlily. By 2020 it was under 20% and by 2040 it is prredicted to fall to around 10%.
In contrast, the group of people aged 65 and over shows a strong rise. It was only about 5% in 1960, and it increased slowly until 1990. After 2000, the growth became faster, reaching about 25% in 2020. It is expected to rise further to around 35% in 2040.
