Overall, the largest proportion of adult fiction increased over the period and became the dominant category in 2012. While biography, travel and other genres declined over the same period.
It is noticeable that adult fiction accounted for 20% in 1972 and then rose dramatically to 45% in 2012. Similarly, children’s fiction also increased steadily, rising from 20% to 25% in 2012.
By contrast, the remaining categories all declined in comparison. Biography sales dramatically fell from 20% in 1972 to 15% and dropped further to just 8% in 2012. Travel book seals decreased significantly from 15% to 10% in 2012. The proportion of other books also dropped considerably, decreasing from 25% to 12% over the 40 year period.
