The table illustrates the quality of life in five different countries, based on four indicators: GNP per head (1982 US dollars), daily calorie intake per person, life expectancy at birth, and infant mortality rate (per 1,000 live births).
Overall, USA leads in all categories, whereas Bangladesh ranks last. The table shows that other three categories are mostly dependent on GNP per head, since increases in GNP are associated with rises in the other categories.
If we sort the GNP per head category in ascending order, USA comes first with a major difference since its GNP per head is 13160 in 1982 in US dollars. For other three categories the USA shows a similar pattern, with 3653 daily calorie supply, 74 years life expectancy at births and 12 infant mortality per 1000 live births. After the USA, Egypt takes the secondary position in GNP category, with 690 US dollars per head in 1982. Unlike the USA, infant mortality rate in Egypt shows a significant difference despite its GNP per head. With 87 infant mortality, Indonesia overtakes Egypt and comes second in this category.
For the last positions of the GNP list, Indonesia and Bolivia ranks third and fourth, as Indonesia’s GNP is slightly higher than Bolivia’s with only 10 dollars difference. Subsequent to Bolivia, Bangladesh comes last, with only 140 US dollars GNP. Likely the GNP category, Bangladesh comes last for the other three category as well.
