Band 8+: Space exploration is a waste of money. Governments should focus more on addressing public problems instead. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There are contrasting viewpoints on whether governments should invest significant financial resources in space exploration, or whether they should allocate funds to solve Earth’s existing problems. From my perspective, I align with the first opinion, arguing that there are several benefits to space exploration.

On the one side of the argument, some people who advocate for prioritizing spending money to resolve pressing issues on Earth might highlight several compelling reasons. One significant rationale is that environmental problems have a severe impact on humans’ lives. Extreme natural disasters such as global warming, climate change, or unpredictable weather events pose a huge threat to economic development and individuals’ safety. To clarify, global warming causes rising sea levels and melting ice, ultimately leading to the vanishing of flora and fauna. Furthermore, the educational gap is also an alarming problem that needs immediate attention from governments. Indeed, in remote areas, many children are not given opportunities to access education, or they lack studying equipment, which hinders them from developing their full potential. Without immediate solutions, this issue can lead to increasing educational inequality, ultimately undermining the principle of equal educational opportunities.

Despite these arguments, I firmly believe that the advantages of space exploration are far more significant. First and foremost, this discovery satisfies humans’ desire for adventure and answers fundamental questions about life’s existence beyond Earth. Given that humans are naturally curious and eager to explore new things, space exploration is widely regarded as the ultimate frontier that people aspire to discover. By exploring space, humans can gain a deeper understanding of the origins of our universe, gravity, and the potential for life on other planets and in the solar system. Secondly, space exploration also significantly contributes to technological advancements and facilitates scientific research. Thanks to these discoveries, humans have developed innovations such as satellite technology, which enables global communication, accurate weather forecasting tools, and GPS navigation systems, all of which enable governments to address Earth’s issues. In addition, medical advancements conducted in space exploration, particularly by ISS, have helped prevent bacterial contamination, ultimately improving citizens’ living standards.

In conclusion, some believe that substantial financial resources should be spent on addressing Earth’s problems instead of discovering other planets. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that investing a huge amount of money in space exploration can not only answer fundamental questions but also develop innovations that can effectively deal with pressing problems on Earth.
